DETANGLING 2
XOXO ladies ๐
We have discussed the meaning, types, some processes and products involved in detangling in the first part.
In this concluding part, we will continue on the processes, products and tools involved and it's importance.
we will get to know when it's necessary to detangle, the pros and con of wet and dry detangling amidst other beneficial tips.
Detangling can be achieved by;
1. Wetting and conditioning the hair: this have been explained in the first part.
2. Detangling in sections: this makes the process much easier than trying to detangle all the hair at once. When the hair is cut into smaller sections and detangled one after the other, it ensures that all part of the hair undergoes the process.
Wet and condition the particular section you are ready to detangle, because the moisture in a particular section might be lost if made wet without being detangled for long.
3. Finger detangle before using a comb: this is the use of your fingers to carefully comb your hair. It helps to separate the hair strands gently, it also helps to remove the major knots and tangles. It makes comb detangling easier. Note that finger detangling alone cannot properly detangle the hair, you should still detangle using a comb.
4. Use the proper tool: A wide toothed comb or a brush with widely spaced bristle is the best tool to use while detangling. The wide toothed comb helps detangle the hair without getting onto the hair strands unlike the tiny toothed comb which does not
detangle knots easily, and increases the rate of breakage. Brushes helps to remove the shed hair from detangling.
The tools should be of rubber base and not plastic(rubbers can withstand strain more than plastics that breaks when strained). Brushes with ball point end should be avoided, because hair strands can get tangled with the balls.
5. Start from the end of the hair: detangling from the end helps give way for the shed hair and the tangles for easy removal. You hold onto the end of the hair and detangle with the other hand.
Taking it bit by bit, you move from the tip to the base until that particular section is fully detangled.
Importance of detangling
1. It helps in shedding hair strands that can cause matting, knots and breakage.
2. Helps to get rid of tangles.
3. It avoids split ends and damaged cuticles that results from the friction of styling tangled hair.
4. It reduces breakage.
5. It helps retain hair length.
6. It makes the process of washing and styling easier.
7. Aids even distribution of hair care products through out the hair.
When is it necessary to detangle?
1. Before and after shampooing: shampoos tend to cause knots in the hair, so you should detangle before using the shampoo to reduce the
rate of detangling, and after shampooing to remove the tangles caused by the shampoo.
2. Before and after styling: detangling your hair makes it easier to style and gives a fine result due to the smoothness of the hair strands. Detangling after undoing a style is also important, as it helps to shed strands locked up in the hair.
3. Before and after applying a product: this helps to increase the rate of the product's distribution and gives a even and finer result.
Advantages of Wet detangling.
This process involves the use of conditioner in relative large quantity, the conditioner helps to reduce friction by smoothening the cuticles and coating the hair strands.
It makes detangling easier and makes the hair flexible enough to withstand combing.
Disadvantages of wet detangling
It requires one to be very careful, because when the hair is wet, it is in a very weak and fragile state. It requires a slippery conditioner to ease combing.
When hair is wet, it shrinks and shrinking can increase the rate of detangling.
Advantages of Dry detangling.
The hair is relatively stronger, it's not very weak or fragile because it isn't really wet, so it can withstand force and avoids breakage.
Also, it does not allow the hair to shrink.
Disadvantages of Dry detangling
Due to the rigidity of the hair strands, one might loose strands of hair or chip away cuticles if one isn't careful.
It needs oil to reduce the friction and rate of hair loss. It requires a lot of patience and time.
So which do you prefer?
Dry detangling?
wet detangling?

Tips from EAGLE EYE
1. Be a lady with an eagle eye :
Having an eagle eye here means you should be more cautious of your hair growth, health and status, you should be able to pick and sense changes in your hair as quick as possible.
Assuming i wasn't able to pick the signal of hair loss from my hair as early as possible, and didn't undo the hairdo until it reached two weeks, it is certain that the amount of hair loss especially at the front line would be more than I experienced after loosing it on the 5th day
You should be more cautious of your hair when;
๐ You tried out a new style, to know how compatible it is with your hair type, your hair might be too soft to bear the strain from such hairdo.
๐ A new stylist styles your hair,because
๐นit's possible that she styles most of her customers hair with attachments, so she is used to styling hair with extra force to plait the attachment with the hair. She might have applied this same extra force while styling your hair without attachments.
๐นAnother contributing factor could be that she is newly trained into the profession. It's normal for new trainees to add extra force while making hair. The feeling is that it's the force that makes the hairdo come out fine and pleasing to the eyes. Most stylists exhibit this feature at the early stage of their training/work, and gets over it with experience overtime.
2. Don't be too quiet:
o ye quite ones, I know you are shy, or probably you are just been quiet because you want to give the stylist her autonomy, but still there are some situations that requires you to speak out, just like the hairline suicide that happened in the story.
Don't be like me who knows the consequences of pulling on edges while making hair and still kept quiet when I noticed the stylist was doing so.
If you don't pity yourself for the pain you would feel, pity yourself for the hair that you might lost because of being quiet.
3. Having an idea is not bad:
Yes styling might not be your field and you might not have any interest in it, but still, there's nothing bad if you have an idea. It might not be of use on a normal day, but think of unavoidable cases like this COVID-19 lock down. You probably have not been able to meet with that your favorite stylist. Does that mean your hair have to suffer?
Just imagine if I wasn't able to twist my hair myself that day, I would probably not want to loosen my hair because of the fear of bearing an untidy hair and have it been susceptible to more hair loss, or would have loosened it, but leave it to undergo another resting period before I get the chance to make another style.
